Amazon has updated the category selection process within the KDP dashboard. Here are the key changes to note:

  • Choose three categories

Previously you could only choose two categories. The categories that you can select have now changed.
  • Can no longer request ten categories

You can only choose from the category list.

Log in to your KDP dashboard and navigate to the "Book Details" section.
  • Explore Categories

Browse through the tree, expanding categories to view subcategories.
  • Select three categories

Choose the most relevant categories that accurately reflects your book's genre.

You need to revisit your KDP Dashboard to review and update your categories.

The amazon book categories that you can choose from when publishing a book from the KDP dashboard, have been vague to say the least. It has always seemed like a complete gamble with what you choose. There was also the fact that the categories had no relevance to the categories that you see when searching for books on Amazon.

This has now changed. It has taken Amazon KDP many years to make this change, but finally they have.

What are these changes?

  1. You can now choose three categories, rather than two.
  2. The categories now relate to search on Amazon.

There was an option where you could email KDP and request to be put in up to ten categories. If you did this then there is a very real chance that your book willl be removed from these and the book will only appear in the three categories selected in the dashboard. If you did this you must update the categories for your book.

    This is a great opportunity revisit your book and take advantage of this change. By looking at the categories, that you have chosen for you book, you have the chance of increasing your book sales.

      How do I choose the right category?

      To choose the right category for your book you need to have some information.

      Every category has a competitiveness. What do I mean by that? What I mean is that some categories are more popular than others. By popular, this not only means the number of people searching for books in that category, but also how many books there are in that category. As well as what percentage of those books come from a major publisher.

      In a very competitive category it might take many hundreds of books sales, to get int o the top ten ranking for that category. With even more to get to the number one spot.

      The ideal way is too choose a competitive category and then two less competitive one. If you choose a  category that needs, for example, twenty book sales to get into the top ten, you have a chance of doing that. If you can get into the top ten you then have a chance of a lot more being buying your book due to the exposure of being there.

        The big question is. How do I find out this information?

        There are several websites and also some Chrome browser plugins that will give you this information. They work by accessing the API provided by Amazon. It is however necessary to pay for a subscription to access the information.
