David Baboulene

A Life in Words

DB Muppet

David's first deal was for two humorous novels based on his own global travels as a teenager. Ocean Boulevard (2004) and Jumping Ships (2006) both received film deals in Hollywood, sparking an interest for David in the differences in story dynamics between books and films. He began a 10-year research programme, generating a ground-breaking new theory of narrative which is now formalised in his Ph.D. and five books on the subject including his best seller: The Story Book (2010), his definitive academic work Story in Mind (2019) and his career-defining masterwork: The Primary Colours of Story (2020).

Using his knowledge of story theory David is now a story consultant or writer on more than 50 books, film and television productions.

He is also the managing director of DreamEngine Publishing and is a film producer and head of story at Skylark Vision - a film and television production company.

Meeting with David was an epiphany for me. It took me a month to fully grasp David´s advice, but it did sink in and when I started to write again, I just felt so FREE and infinitely more creative. My book is now complete, and I am so, so proud of it. I am sitting here looking at two contracts to publish, both from reputable and well-known publishing houses and with more potential offers due in shortly.

David has a (genuinely) unique understanding of story combined with a masterful ability to help break it down. His wisdom and advice were invaluable in my success, and I have learnt so much from him that I will continue to apply throughout my career. Thank you, David!
