Working With a Contemporary Step Outline
From the seed of an idea... to the silver screen.
In this short book, David takes a simple idea. Indentifies the power that is implicit to the inspiration. Develops a premise. Builds it out into a step outline. Then a script. He then took his crew out on the hills and shot the movie.
This unique work documents the whole process and powerfully demonstrates the critical central value of the step outline.
And if you are a member of the DreamEngine you can read the script and watch the movie that results.
In the coming year, he plans to do the entire development lifecycle again for a novel and a full-length feature film.
This book, although very short, complements David's The Story Book and The Primary Colours of Story by showing how he used the information to create a step outline of a story. I appreciate having the digital and paperback versions. I highly recommend it as well as David's other books.
I bought this book with the story outline for Bella. Yesterday I learnt a lot reading the first few pages. I learnt about creating intrigue and information gaps. Really amazed at how quickly - as it was mentioned in the first few pages - that I picked it up. I'm amazed at how quickly it helped me to write - yes I started to write - the first few steps and outline of a story - with the thought of the audience in mind. I'm amazed. So grateful. I was so happy because the book proved to be such an unexpected excellent tool. I'm a complete beginner and it helped me make the first few steps which were daunting, I had felt overwhelmed! Thank you.
David’s love and understanding of story has elevated many of my scripts which have subsequently gone on to be produced and win awards. He’s a fantastic story consultant – encouraging and full of good ideas – I can’t imagine ever writing a script without asking David to read it.
We cannot recommend David highly enough. His insights and expertise have been invaluable, helping us get our script to the point where we’ve sold the option and look forward to full production.
Story is based on the psychology in the conversation between an author and an audience. David brings the world genuinely new tools and methods that give you an objective and measurable understanding of how good your story is and clarity in how to improve it. Highly recommended.
