Book Publishing

How to Publish a Book?

This is the Question!

The answer is that it that there are many options for publishing a book.

Publishing a book involves making your work available to a wider audience. There are several options available to authors when it comes to publishing a book. These options can be broadly categorized into traditional publishing and self-publishing.

We will discuss traditional publishing methods as well as how to self publish a book. Of course before looking at how to publish your book, you need you need to know how to write a book. The DreamEngine Academy will give you all the knowledge you need as to how to write a book and get it published.

Here's an overview of each method of book publishing:

1. Traditional Publishing:

Traditional publishing involves working with an established publishing house to bring your book to market. These publishing houses have established distribution networks, marketing teams, and editing resources. Authors typically need to submit a book proposal or a complete manuscript for consideration. If accepted, the publishing house takes care of various aspects of the publishing process, including editing, cover design, printing, distribution, and marketing. This is the dream of every author when they are asking themselves how to get a book published.

Advantages:

Established industry connections and expertise.
Professional editing, design, and production.
Wider distribution to bookstores and online retailers.
Potential for greater exposure and recognition.
Disadvantages:

Can be difficult to secure a publishing deal.
Longer timeline from acceptance to publication.
Authors often receive lower royalty percentages.
Limited control over design and marketing decisions.

2. Self-Publishing:

Self-publishing gives authors the freedom to independently publish and distribute their books. With the rise of digital platforms, self-publishing has become more accessible and popular.

Print Self-Publishing:

Authors can work with print-on-demand (POD) services to produce physical copies of their books as they are ordered. This is how to publish a book yourself. You can refer to the KDP help pages to learn how to publish a book on Amazon. There are also many helpful articles and videos online to show you how to self publish a book.
Reduced upfront costs as books are printed only when purchased.
Examples of POD platforms: Amazon KDP Print, IngramSpark.

By far the most popular way to self publish a print book is with KDP publishing or Kindle Direct Publishing. KDP Amazon is the book publishing arm of the worlds largest online shopping site. Amazon actually started as a bookstore!

Ebook Self-Publishing:

Authors can publish digital versions of their books for e-readers and other electronic devices. It is the same thing to write a book for print as to how to write an ebook, the file needed is just a different format. You will need a print PDF file and an ePub file.
Typically offers higher royalties compared to traditional publishing.
Examples of ebook platforms: Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), Apple Books, Smashwords.

Kindle publishing is the biggest publishing of eBooks. Unfortunately they want to control the market by putting restrictions on you. Firstly to read a Kindle book, you must have either a Kindle device or the Kindle App on your computer or Smartphone. The other thing you need of course is an Amazon account. If you decide to sell you eBook anywhere else other than Amazon KDP, they will slash your royalty rate.

Hybrid Publishing:

Combines aspects of traditional and self-publishing.
Authors pay a fee for services like editing, design, and distribution.
More control over the publishing process while leveraging professional services.
Examples: She Writes Press, BookBaby.
DIY Self-Publishing:

Authors handle all aspects of publishing, from editing to formatting to cover design.
Maximum control over the process and creative decisions.
Requires significant time, effort, and knowledge.
Online Platforms:

Some websites offer serialized or interactive publishing, allowing authors to release content in smaller parts.
Examples: Wattpad, Medium.
Crowdfunding Publishing:

Authors can raise funds through platforms like Kickstarter to cover publishing expenses.
Engages readers directly in the book's creation and publication.
Vanity Press/Subsidy Publishing:

Authors pay a publishing company to produce their book.
Usually provides minimal editorial or marketing support.

      • "I started out as a novelist with two traditional publishing deals. I then got a 'hybrid' publishing deal (shared risk co-publishing) and made four times more money from those same books. I then got involved in agency deals around the world, as far afield as China, the USA, South America and Vietnam - activities I could never have imagined as an author at the outset. Most writers make basic errors in turning their talent and passion into success. I am here to help you avoid the tripwires and build the future you desire for yourself."
