Book Design

Book Formatting DreamEngine

Have you ever dreamed of holding your own published book in your hands? If so, you've probably considered the daunting task of book formatting or design.

Congratulations, you have written a great story! You have also been working with a professional editor to make the story the best it can possible be, as well as having an amazing cover design that ticks all the boxes for that.

Book design goes beyond simply making your words look pretty on a page. It's about strategically using visual elements to complement your story, enhance readability, and create a unique brand identity for your book. Think of it as the invisible architect, shaping the reader's journey through your words and emotions.

Understanding Book Design

Book design goes beyond just making your book look pretty. It's about communicating the essence of your story through visual elements.

  • Cover design

The first impression your book makes.

  • Typography

Choosing fonts that are readable and complement your book's tone.

  • Layout

Spacing, margins, and headers that guide the reader through the text.

  • Images and illustrations

Visually enhancing your story and breaking up text.

Key elements of great book design

By understanding the fundamentals of book design and formatting, you can create a professional-looking book that will grab attention, engage readers, and stand out from the crowd. Remember, your book is a reflection of your hard work and dedication, so invest the time and effort to make it shine!

  • Invest in a good cover design

It's your book's calling card, so make it professional and eye-catching.
  • Proofread meticulously

Typos and formatting errors can detract from your reader's experience.

  • Use consistent formatting

Maintain a uniform style throughout your book for a polished look.

  • Test your ebook on different devices

Ensure it renders correctly on various e-readers and tablets.

If you are going to self-publish and do everything yourself, there are many things that you need to know.

You can utilize online resources: Many websites and forums offer helpful advice and tutorials for book design and formatting. You can use the tools offered by KDP to upload your book from your Word file, but it takes some considerable knowledge to do this and make the finished print book look great.

Paperback print PDF

To print a paperback book the usual file format is Adobe PDF. There are many presets for the print pdf, such as embedded fonts and colour profiles that tell the machines what these should be.KDP print on demand does not require this as they want o make it as easy as possible for authors to upload books. They are not interested in quality, only quantity!

EPUB file for Kindle

.EPUB is the industry standard file for e-books. The big problem is that this formatting is completely different to the print formatting. EPUB uses a 'flowable' format to display the pages of the book. Again, KDP offer tools to upload as a word document, but again you have little control. To product and EPUB you need to either use a dedicated application of use Adobe InDesign, all of which have a steep learning curve.

Here's an overview of the book design process to produce a PDF for print:

Page Layout Software

Use professional desktop publishing software like Adobe InDesign, or even Microsoft Word (for simpler layouts) to design your book's interior. These programs offer precise control over typography, layout, and formatting.

Page Size and Margins

Determine the size of your book, which is typically specified in terms of width and height (e.g., 6" x 9" for a standard trade paperback). Set appropriate margins to ensure that text and images don't get too close to the edges, typically around 0.5 to 1 inch.

Page Numbering

Decide where to place page numbers (usually in the header or footer) and choose a consistent font and size for them. Ensure that page numbers are clear but unobtrusive.

Typography

Select readable fonts for the body text and headings. Common choices for body text include serif fonts like Times New Roman or Garamond. For headings, you can use a complementary serif or sans-serif font. Maintain consistent font choices and sizes throughout the book.

Line Spacing and Paragraph Styles

Adjust line spacing (leading) to make the text comfortable to read. Define paragraph styles to ensure consistent spacing, indentation, and alignment throughout the book.

Chapter Titles and Headings

Use distinct fonts or styles for chapter titles and headings to differentiate them from the body text. Create a consistent and visually appealing hierarchy for headings.

Images and Illustrations

Ensure that images are high-resolution (usually 300 DPI or higher) for crisp print quality. Embed images in the PDF, and ensure they're placed at a high enough resolution within your layout software.

Color Mode

If your book contains color elements, design them in CMYK mode (for print) rather than RGB (for screens) to ensure accurate color reproduction. Keep in mind that printing in color can be more expensive than grayscale or black and white.

Bleed and Trim Marks

For pages with images or backgrounds that extend to the edges of the paper (full-bleed pages), set up bleed areas and trim marks to guide the printer on where to cut the pages. Bleed typically extends 0.125 inches beyond the trim size.

Master Pages

Use master pages to apply consistent headers, footers, and page layouts to all pages of the book, making it easier to maintain a uniform design.

Pagination and Table of Contents

Ensure your table of contents is accurate and includes page numbers. Update it as needed to reflect the final layout. Make sure your page numbering starts where it should (often at the first chapter) and follows a consistent pattern.

Proofreading and Editing

Before finalizing your design, thoroughly proofread and edit the content to catch any errors, typos, or formatting issues.

Export to PDF

When you're satisfied with your book's layout, export the document to a PDF format that is suitable for print. Use the PDF/X-1a:2001 standard for print-ready PDFs. This standard ensures compatibility with most professional printing processes.

Embed Fonts

Ensure that all fonts used in your document are embedded in the PDF. This prevents font substitution issues during printing.

PDF Compression and Quality

Balance file size and image quality. While it's essential to keep the file size manageable, avoid excessive compression that might result in loss of image quality.

Final check

Carefully review the print-ready PDF to ensure that everything appears as intended, with no missing or shifted content.

Printer's Requirements

Consult with your chosen print-on-demand service or traditional printer to ensure your PDF meets their specific requirements regarding file format, color profile, and bleed areas.

Proof Copy

Before printing a large batch of books, order a proof copy to review the physical version and make any necessary adjustments.

Understanding the Publishing Industry and what it is looking for.

I believe that it is important that every author has an understanding of the publishing industry. That is why we offer the Author Edition in our online training academy. Here you will learn everything you need to know about the industry and how to become the author that the industry wants.

There are many skills needed to publish your book that you most likely do not need or want to learn, such as formatting your book. You will also need to create a cover and there are many technical aspects to this. You may feel you are happy and able to do this, but this is where authors do not understand nearly enough about publishing.

For example, the title you choose is almost certainly selected on the basis of your artistic love of those words rather than giving any consideration to the impact that title, sub-title and the accompanying cover design will have on your ranking and sales out there in the commercial world. Getting these things wrong can kill your chances before you have even started. We use complex algorithms and software to test and rewrite a title to ensure it gets to the top of search strings and, for example, Amazon categories. Take a look at the marketing resources we offer our authors for a glimpse of what is required.

You will also need an editor to work with you. No matter how good a writer you are, it is essential to have an experienced editor to read through your book. It is very easy to think that your book is perfect when it is not.

In reality, if you want to make any sales, you will either have to embark on several training courses to learn how to format your book, design your book cover, be your own editor, and become an expert in publishing and book marketing. Or you will have to pay people to do these things for you.
