What Makes a Hybrid Publisher Different from a Vanity Press?
The term gets used loosely. What separates a genuine hybrid arrangement from a vanity press is honesty about what's actually on offer. Production, not a guarantee of sales. A hybrid publisher that promises distribution, marketing reach, or commercial success it can't deliver is a vanity press. That's true whatever it calls itself. A hybrid publisher that charges a fair fee for real production work is doing something legitimate. That's true as long as it says plainly what it can't promise.
What You're Actually Paying For
Editing, cover design, and interior layout, to a professional standard. Depending on the arrangement, a publisher's name on the book instead of "Independently Published." What you are not paying for, from any legitimate hybrid publisher, is guaranteed bookshop stocking or guaranteed sales. No publisher, traditional or hybrid, can promise that a book sells.
