An optimised Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing KDP book listing is critical to standing out in a crowded marketplace.
At DreamEngine, we’ve seen the challenges self-published authors face, and we’re here to help you refine your KDP listing to boost discoverability and sales.
This guide covers the key benefits of optimisation, five essential elements to focus on, and why expert knowledge is vital—especially with Amazon’s 2023 category changes.

Why you need to Optimise Your KDP Book Listing
An optimised KDP listing can transform your book’s performance on Amazon. Here are the top benefits:
- Enhanced Discoverability: Strategic keywords and categories, ensure your book appears in relevant Amazon searches, reaching your target audience.
- Targeted Reader Reach: Precise category selection, per the May 2023 KDP update, places your book in front of readers browsing your genre, such as historical fiction or satire, or whatever your genre is.
- Higher Click-Through Rates: A compelling title, subtitle, and cover, entice readers to click, increasing engagement.
- Professional Credibility: A polished listing with optimised metadata and reviews builds trust, attracting readers and industry professionals
On the 1st June 2023 Amazon made a huge change to the categories section in the KDP Dashboard.
If you have not updated your book since then, you need to!

There are a lot of critical moving parts to your KDP Book Listing. This is a comprehensive list of everything.
Book Title
Why It’s Important: Amazon’s search algorithm heavily relies on the title to match customer searches, making it a primary driver of discoverability. Entering the title exactly as it appears on the book’s cover ensures accurate search results and prevents mismatches, per Amazon’s KDP guidelines. The book title is included in the search listing on Amazon, and you can put keywords in the title, but this is not generally done for fiction books. But you can!
Book Subtitle
Why It’s Important: The subtitle is part of the searchable information on Amazon, significantly impacting visibility. Including relevant keywords in the subtitle (e.g., “Love and Betrayal in Ancient Britain’s Roman Wars” for a historical novel) enhances searchability for specific themes. Writing a great subtitle that includes your keywords is essential. It not only improves discoverability but also gives the theme of the story, encouraging readers to click and explore further. N.B Titles and Subtitles cannot be changed after publication of a physical book, but you can on Kindle books.
Categories
Why It’s Important: Categories organise Amazon’s vast catalogue, connecting books to readers’ interests. Since the June 2023 KDP update, authors can now select only three categories directly in the dashboard, making the right choices critical for ranking in searches and appearing in Amazon’s recommendations.
Keywords
Why They’re Important: Keywords (up to seven, 50 characters each) are crucial for Amazon’s search algorithm, determining what searches your book apperas in. Well-chosen keywords also influence category rankings and Amazon’s recommendation engine, driving sales velocity.
Book Description
Why It’s Important: The book description is your sales pitch, convincing readers to buy. The book desription is not part of the searchable information on Amazon. Just write a beautiful description of your book and don't worry about keywords. You can add reviews in the description if you wish.
Book Cover
Why It’s Important: A professional, genre-appropriate cover is the first visual impression, driving click-through rates (CTR). Covers aligned with genre expectations attract more clicks, as seen in high-ranking books on Amazon. A poorly designed cover, can deter readers, reducing sales potential.
Pricing Strategy
Why It’s Important: Competitive pricing aligned with your genre and audience will increase sales.
A+ Content (Enhanced Brand Content)
Why It’s Important: A+ Content is how authors to add text and images to the bottom of your book page on Amazon. Amazon says this can increase conversions by up to 5–10%.
Craft a Compelling Title and Subtitle
Amazon’s search algorithm heavily relies on the title and subtitle to match to customer searches, making them primary drivers for discoverability. You should enter the book title exactly as it appears on the book’s cover to ensure accurate search results. You can only change your paperback book title before you publish your book. So make sure it is correct. You can change a Kindle books title after publication.
Historically book titles are just that, but in today's digital age some authors are adding keywords to their book titles. In non-fiction books it is very commmon. You should make your own decision about this, remembering that the exact same thing should be written on the cover of your book.
Understanding Book Categories on Amazon KDP:
Amazon’s book categories are complicated to say the least! They have to organise a vast catalog, to help readers find books that match their interests. Choosing the right categories is crucial for ranking in searches, reaching your audience, and influencing Amazon’s recommendations.
In June 2023, Amazon made significant changes to the KDP category selection process, impacting self-published authors.
Understanding Amazon KDP Category Changes:
Amazon’s 2023 update changed how you select categories for your book on Kindle Direct Publishing or KDP, making it simpler but more critical to choose wisely. Here’s what you need to know in plain language.
- The Old Way (Pre-2023): You picked categories from the BISAC system (a standard book categorisation system), and Amazon mapped them to its own categories. You could also ask KDP support to add up to ten categories or adjust them if needed..
- The New Way (Post-2023): You now choose three categories directly from Amazon’s list in the KDP dashboard when setting up your book. Amazon do also make decisions on what categories your book goes in, based on your book’s content and keywords.
Your three category choices are crucial for getting your book found by readers. Picking the right ones helps your book appear in relevant searches and Amazon recommendations, boosting visibility and sales.
Be strategic—choose specific, less competitive categories to rank higher with fewer sales. Check your older books, as their categories may be outdated since the June 2023, update.
5 Important things to know when choosing Amazon Book Categories.:
- Three-Category Limit
You can now select only three categories directly in the KDP dashboard. - No Additional Requests
Amazon no longer allows authors to contact support for extra categories. Books published before June 2023 will have outdated categories and need updating to stay relevant. - Aligned with Amazon Store
Categories now match Amazon’s store structure (over 11,000 options), replacing BISAC categories for more precise placement, helping your book appear in relevant searches. - Competitiveness Matters
Categories vary in competitiveness. Niche categories require fewer sales to rank high compared to broad ones like “Fiction,” so choose wisely. - Select Niche Categories
Choose one competitive category and two less competitive ones (e.g., needing ~20 sales to rank in the top 10) to maximise bestseller ranking potential.
Use High-Performing Keywords
Keywords (up to seven, 50 characters each) are also vital for Amazon’s search algorithm, determining where your book appears in search results and influencing its visibility on category pages and Amazon’s recommendation engine.
Selecting high-traffic, low-competition keywords ensures your book reaches the right audience, maximising discoverability. High-traffic, low-competition keywords help books rank higher in niche categories, requiring fewer sales to achieve visibility compared to broad terms like “fiction”.
For self-published authors, unoptimised or generic keywords can bury a book in Amazon’s vast catalogue. Strategic keyword selection, avoiding restricted terms per Amazon’s KDP guidelines, boosts click-through rates and long-term sales potential.
Your Book Description
Your book description is your primary sales pitch on Amazon, designed to convert browsers into buyers by capturing their interest and compelling them to purchase. A well-crafted description highlights the book’s unique appeal.
Keywords in the book description are not factored into Amazon's algorithm. This is likely because of past abuse by keyword stuffing.
A compelling description builds reader trust, making it essential for self-published authors to stand out and maximise sales potential.
Your Book Cover
Do you judge a book by its cover? On Amazon people certainly do!
A professional, genre-appropriate cover, serves as the first visual impression for potential readers, playing a critical role in driving click-through rates (CTR) on Amazon.
A cover that aligns with genre expectations—such as dark, eerie imagery for horror or evocative, period-specific visuals for historical fiction—immediately signals to readers that the book matches their interests, encouraging them to click and explore further.
High-ranking books on Amazon’s Best Sellers lists demonstrate that visually compelling, genre-specific covers, designed with bold typography, vibrant colours and relevant imagery, significantly boost engagement.
Conversely, a poorly designed cover, can deter readers, undermining even a well-written story and reducing sales potential.
A professional cover also enhances credibility, appealing to both readers and industry professionals, and supports Amazon’s algorithm by increasing clicks, which contribute to sales velocity and higher rankings.
If you can, invest in a Professional and Experienced Book Cover Designer, to design a genre-appropriate cover to boost click-through rates, first impressions count.
Pricing Strategy
A competitive pricing strategy, tailored to your genre and target audience, is crucial for driving sales.
Setting a price that aligns with reader expectations encourages purchases and boosts discoverability.
Regular price testing, (yes you can change the price at any time!) such as adjusting between price points to find the sweet spot, and leveraging promotions like Kindle Countdown Deals or free book campaigns, can create sales spikes that improve BSR Best Seller Ranking.
An uncompetitive price, either too high or too low, can deter readers or signal low quality, reducing click-through rates and sales potential.
For self-published authors, a well-researched pricing strategy, informed by genre norms and market trends, is essential to stand out in Amazon’s vast catalogue and sustain long-term sales growth.
A+ Content (Enhanced Brand Content)
A+ Content, also known as Enhanced Brand Content, allows authors to enrich their Amazon KDP book listing with images, charts, detailed descriptions and engaging storytelling elements.
You will find it in the Marketing Section of KDP Home, not inside your book listing.
Add A+ content will increase sales by a small percent, but every sale counts right
This feature transforms a standard listing into a more immersive experience, showcasing a book’s unique appeal—such as evocative imagery of an ancient Roman Yorkshire setting for historical fiction novel on that subject. You can also add reviews of your books from outside of Amazon, Goodreads reviews for example.
Add testimonials for you as an author, as well as other books in the series or other books you have published
By highlighting key themes, characters, or reader praise, A+ Content builds trust and captivates browsers, encouraging them to purchase. It also enhances credibility, making the book appear more professional and appealing to both readers and industry professionals.
A+ Content isn't directly factored into the Amazon search algorithm's ranking calculations, so keywords are not a factor. But can improve search visibility indirectly by enhancing user experience and engagement.
For self-published authors, adding A+ Content is essential to differentiate their book in Amazon’s competitive catalogue and maximise reader interest.

Tips to Make the Most of Your KDP Listing
An optimised Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) listing is a powerful tool to boost your book’s visibility, attract readers, and drive sales. Here are key tips to maximise its impact:
Optimise for Search
Use high-traffic, low-competition keywords (up to seven, 50 characters each) in your title, subtitle, and description, researched via Amazon’s autocomplete or keyword tools. This ensures your book ranks higher in search results, reaching your target audience.
Craft a Compelling Title and Subtitle
Include genre-specific keywords (e.g., “YA horror novella”) in your title and subtitle to enhance searchability while keeping them engaging. A clear, keyword-rich title and subtitle align with reader expectations and boost click-through rates.
Choose Niche Categories
Select one competitive and two less competitive categories (e.g., “Teen & Young Adult Historical Mysteries”) from Amazon’s browse tree to rank higher with fewer sales. Update pre-2023 listings to align with the May 2023 three-category limit for better visibility.
Write an Engaging Book Description
Craft a persuasive description with naturally embedded keywords, highlighting your book’s appeal (e.g., “Yorkshire historical fiction” for emotional depth). Include a strong call to action (e.g., “Grab your copy now!”) to convert browsers into buyers.
Invest in a Professional Cover
Design a genre-appropriate cover with bold typography and visuals that reflect your book’s theme (e.g., eerie imagery for horror). A high-quality cover drives click-through rates, making a strong first impression in Amazon’s competitive catalogue.
Other Aspects that can improve your Book Listing on Amazon.
These cannot be done inside the KDP Bookshelf settings.
Customer Reviews
Customer reviews are a critical component of optimising an Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) book listing, even though they cannot be directly added via the KDP dashboard. Reviews build trust with potential readers by providing social proof, influencing their decision to purchase, and enhancing the book’s credibility.
Positive reviews, particularly those that naturally incorporate keywords relevant to the book’s genre (e.g., “gripping ancient history” or “immersive historical fiction”), can improve the book’s visibility in Amazon’s search algorithm and recommendation engine. (Amazon uses its proprietary A9 algorithm and there is evidence that this is the case across the majority of Amazon. This might not necessarily the case for books. I will try and find out.)
Encouraging honest reviews through strategies such as Advance Reader Copy (ARC) programmes, engaging with reader communities on platforms like Goodreads, or requesting feedback from early buyers helps books gain traction and boosts sales velocity, a key factor in Amazon’s Best Seller Rank (BSR).
For self-published authors, unoptimised listings often lack a review strategy, leading to low review counts that hurt discoverability and deter potential buyers. A robust review profile, built ethically without violating Amazon’s guidelines (e.g., no incentivised reviews), signals quality and relevance, making it essential for standing out in Amazon’s vast catalogue and driving long-term sales growth.
KDP Ads
Amazon Ads are painful! It is impossible to get a positive ROI, or return on investment, for a single book in Amazon. The numbers just do not add up. The royalty on the sale of a book is too low.
The dashboard is complicated. Manual KDP Ads need to be checked everyday. You need to look at search terms and make a decision as to whether to add those keywords. You have to make daily decisions as to whether you want to keep paying for a keyword that might pay off. Unlike Amazon Display Ads, they seem to have much less dependability. Amazon KDP Ad support tell me that manual Ads take at least a month before they get results. So you have to run the ad at a loss at the beginning. Keep the max daily spend very low!
The KDP Auto Ads are a whole different story. They say they are good for discovering keywords that you can use in a manual campaign. I am confused as to why they would say that.
KDP Ads can be used as part of book launch. I will go into this in more detail in a separate post on Sales Velocity, that leads to higher BSR or Bestseller Ranking.
